IBM's 1401 system — pioneered, built, and programmed in Plant #1, Endicott, NY — changed the way the world does business. The age of data-driven decision-making began when businesses large and small could afford electronic computers and output reports printed on-the-fly. Of the 10,000 IBM 1401 systems delivered in the 1960s, about a dozen survive. Of these, one system at History@IBM, Boeblingen, Germany and two systems at the Computer History Museum, Mountain View, CA are operational. Restoration of the TechWorks! 1401 system has begun; we are targeting an Action Debut in 2017.
