A replacement eyepiece beamsplitter, donated by Flight Safety, Inc., was installed successfully. The surfaces of the two original beamsplitters had decayed, rendering the optics incapable of generating starfields. Access from below to replace the starball beamsplitter was straightforward, although the Fall 2017 installation involved careful, heavy lifting. The geometry of the telescope display makes access to the eyepiece beamsplitter - sandwiched between the structure and a 3' spherical mirror in an iron frame - much more challenging. Informed by drawings from Sandy Clarkson's collection and pursued with persistence, the second beam splitter was installed without incident.
Next steps: Clean the spherical mirror and refurbish the 1960s arc lamp system.
